I’ll admit it—until recently, I was one of those car enthusiasts who adored their vehicles but never actually worked on them. Every time something broke, I’d head to the shop and hope for the best. Spoiler alert: it was usually expensive.
Most mechanics charge around $80 per hour for labor and mark up parts by 25–50%. This means you’re paying much more for parts than you would if you bought them yourself. For example, when the power seat in my Corvette failed, the repair quote from the shop was $1,000. Instead, I found a refurbished part for $250, spent an afternoon fixing it, and saved $750.
